I. PURPOSE
The procedure is to be used as a standard method
of laundering the UFAC Standard Type I mattress ticking fabric prior to its use
in the UFAC Filling/Padding Test Method--1990 and Interior Fabric Test
Method--1990.
II. APPARATUS AND MATERIALS
1. Automatic washing machine.
2. Automatic dryer.
3. AATCC Standard Reference Detergent.
III. PROCEDURE
1. Cut
three pieces of UFAC Standard Type I mattress ticking fabric 1448 mm (57.0 in)
in length by the width of fabric in the roll. These will make up one washer
load of approximately 4 pounds.
2. Use the full water level of the washer.
3. Set
temperature to yield a water temperature of 49°± 3°C. (120° ± 5°F.).
4. Place
the three pieces of ticking in the washer.
Add 90 g of 1993 AATCC Standard Reference Detergent. Set the washer for a 12 minute washing cycle
on the NORMAL setting. Allow washing to
proceed automatically through the final spin cycle.
5. Separate
tangled pieces and place the washed load in the tumble dryer set at the NORMAL
cycle and dry at the setting which generates exhaust temperatures that cycle
from 60° to 71°C. (140° to 160°F.).
Operate the dryer until the total load is dry. Continue tumbling for five minutes with the heat turned off (cool
down cycle). Remove the load
immediately after the machine stops.
IV. EQUIPMENT
1. A
Kenmore automatic washer has been accepted as the standard machine. Source - Sears, Roebuck & Company. For model number and address of the nearest
Commercial Sales Department, write AATCC, Box 12215, Research Triangle Park,
NC 27709. Any other washer which is known to give comparable results may be
used.
2. Washing machine conditions for NORMAL
setting:
a. Normal agitator speed: 70 ± 5 cycles/min.
b. Normal washing time: set at 12 minutes.
c. Spin speed: 500-510 rpm.
d. Final spin cycle: 4 minutes.
e. Rinse temperature: 41 ± 3°C (105 ± 5°F).
3. These
conditions represent the actual speeds and time available on the selected
Kenmore washer. Other equipment may be
acceptable if it does not vary more than 5% in one or more of these settings.
4. A
Kenmore electric dryer has been accepted as the standard. Source - Sears, Roebuck & Company. For the model number and address of the
nearest Commercial Sales Department, write AATCC, Box 12215, Research Triangle
Park, NC 27709. Any other dryer known
to give comparable results may be used.
5. Dryer conditions:
a. Controlled
exhaust temperature which cycles from 60 to 71° C (140° to 160°F).
b. A
cooling period while tumbling 5 minutes at the end of the drying cycle.
6. Source
of AATCC Standard Reference Detergent:
AATCC, Box 12215, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709.
7. These
dimensions contain a shrinkage allowance designed to yield a finished size of
1219 x 1372 mm (48.0 x 54.0 in). This
size will make 12 each of the 203 x 203 mm (8.0 x 8.0 in) and 305 x 305 mm
(12.0 x 12.0 in) specimens required in the UFAC tests. Any size specimens may be washed, but the 4
pound wash load should be maintained.
